"The Works of Sir William Temple, Bart.," published in London in 1750 by T. Woodward, S. Birt, J. & P. Knapton, and others. This complete two-volume folio set brings together the writings of the English diplomat and essayist Sir William Temple, covering politics, diplomacy, history, trade, philosophy, and literature. Volume I includes "Observations upon the United Provinces of the Netherlands" and "Miscellanea," with essays on government, commerce, ancient and modern learning, conversation, and Horace. Volume II features letters concerning the First Dutch War of 1665, the Triple Alliance of 1668, Temple’s embassy at The Hague, and an introduction to the history of England.

Folio (9" x 14"), with 480 pages in Volume I and 585 pages in Volume II. Bound in full brown leather with gilt rules framing the boards, centered gilt coats of arms on both covers of each volume, gilt edges, and marbled endpapers.

Condition: The set remains solid overall but shows substantial wear consistent with age. Most of the original spine leather is lacking on both volumes, and nearly all title labels are missing; the remaining label bears gilt lettering identifying Volume II. The boards have wear and staining, with bumped and rubbed corners and losses to the tips. Volume II has a 1.25" crack or closed tear at the fore-edge of the upper board. The hinges are tender but secure. Both volumes show foxing and toned pages; Volume I has a visible dampstain in the upper inner corner of its first 16 pages, including the title page and portrait frontispiece, and lacks its final free flyleaf. Volume II has a closed tear to the rear free flyleaf. An important historical collection for enthusiasts of eighteenth-century books, British diplomacy, and early modern European political thought.
