From Wiki: Karl Baedeker (3 November 1801 – 4 October 1859) was a German bookseller and writer known for his success in the field of travel guides thanks to the introduction of the "pocket" format. In 1828, he published the second edition of a tourist guide (Rheinreise von Mainz bis Köln), which is considered to be the initial model for the new format he proposed. He revolutionized the world of travel guides by developing the "pocket" format: until then, in fact, guides intended for travelers were real encyclopedias, often richly illustrated and which, consequently, were only intended for a limited audience. Baedeker guides weigh less than 500 grams; The illustrations give way to numerous maps of the cities and places visited. Its objective is to facilitate tourist visits while dispensing with the services of a tour guide. The use of "stars" to identify the main places and the best hotels is one of the notable innovations of his guides. Baedeker also grouped its guides into a real collection with a visual identity: a red cloth binding with gold lettering.
