"The Danube: Its History & Topography" by William Beattie, illustrated by W. H. Bartlett, published circa 1844 in London by Virtue & Yorston. This illustrated work explores the history, geography, and scenery of the Danube River, with Bartlett's illustrations providing visual views of the regions and landscapes along the river.

4to.(8.5" x 11") 236 pp. Quarter dark green leather with corners over brown cloth boards. Large gilt decorated green leather title block to upper board. Spine with gilt lettering and heavy gilt decoration and centered gilt harps to each compartment, lacking lower quarter of spine material. All edges reddened, tan endpapers. Edgewear, corners bumped and rubbed with loss to tips. Head and foot of spine chipped with loss. Upper board evidently repaired, gutter starting at title page. Both boards heavily soiled, scuffed and rubbed. Rear board strating to fray where cloth meets spine. Small loss to title label on upper board. Marginal foxing and dampstain almost throughout, lighter in some areas and affecting text and plates. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece, engraved title page and dozens of engraved illustrations as well as in-text drawings. A good reading copy with great imagery.

An attractive 19th-century volume for collectors interested in European travel, the Danube, historical geography, river landscapes, and illustrated travel literature.
