A Biographical and Critical Dictionary of Painters and Engravers (London: H. G. Bohn, 1849) is an expanded and revised edition of the classic reference work—originating with Matthew Pilkington—that provides concise biographies, critical notes, and lists of works for artists from the early Renaissance to the mid-nineteenth century. This edition adds over a thousand new entries and includes plates of ciphers, monograms, and engraving marks used by artists, making it an essential Victorian handbook for collectors, dealers, and art historians.
