"A Treatise on the Diseases of the Nervous System (Illustrated) by Dr. James Ross, Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged, published in 1883 in New York by William Wood & Company. This substantial two-volume medical work explores diseases of the nervous system and offers a valuable glimpse into nineteenth-century neurological research and clinical practice. It is illustrated with more than 300 in-text illustrations and six plates, including one in color and four photographic plates.

Octavo (5.5" x 9"). Two volumes, complete. Bound in dark brown cloth with embossed rules framing the boards, gilt spine lettering, and brown endpapers. The original dust jackets are absent. Both volumes show evidence of board reattachment with glue, and the spines appear to have been glued down. The bindings have edgewear, bumped and rubbed corners worn through to the boards, loss at the head and foot of the spines, and areas of fraying at the joints. Paper shelf labels remain at the foot of each spine, and the upper board of Volume I has been reattached unevenly. Red engraved AGNM Library bookplates appear on the front pastedowns, and small oval stamps of the Rhode Island Medical Society are present on the versos of the title pages. Many pages remain uncut, and some have closed tears at the folds. All six plates are present.

A historically interesting set for collectors of antique medical books, early neurology, and the development of nineteenth-century medical science.
