History of France From the Earliest Times to the year 1789 [1789-1848] PUBLISHED DATES 1872-1876, 1883

"History of France From the Earliest Times to the Year 1789" by M. Guizot and Robert Black, published in London by Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle, 1872–1876, with the later volumes extending the narrative through 1848. This substantial collection traces French history from its earliest periods through the French Revolution and into the political and social upheavals of nineteenth-century France.

Volumes I–III cover the history of France from the earliest times through 1789, while Volumes IV–VIII continue from 1789 through 1848, encompassing the French Revolution, Napoleonic period, Bourbon Restoration, and the political developments leading to the Revolution of 1848.

Quarto (7.25" x 10.5"). Bound in three-quarter red morocco with marbled boards and matching marbled endpapers. The spines are exceptionally elaborately gilt, with six compartments divided by five raised bands. One panel bears the title and another the author and volume number, while the remaining four are richly decorated with a central fleur-de-lis surrounded by floral ornamentation. Dates of publication are stamped at the feet of the spines.

The bindings show moderate rubbing along the lower board edges and outer spine hinges, with slightly bumped corners. Deckled edges and several uncut pages remain throughout the volumes. A handsome, substantial collection for collectors of French history, the French Revolution, European political history, and nineteenth-century antiquarian books.
