According to Binder's Art website: The decoration of the edges of a text block with paint, stain, gilding, or indented patterns dates back to the middle ages. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the edges of middle-market English bindings were generally left plain or stained a solid color, but sprinkled edges in black or red rose in popularity during the seventeenth century, and marbled edges experienced a brief vogue from 1670-1690. From the early sixteenth century on, upscale bindings were consistently edged in gold leaf. Gilded edges could be further embellished through gauffering, or indenting a pattern on the edges of a text block using binders’ finishing tools. The majority of gauffered edges were made with a technique called pointillé, in which a small, round-headed finishing tool was used to make repeated impressions of tiny dots that made up a larger pattern. However, the same metal rolls used to tool leather could also be used to adorn the edges of hard text blocks. Gauffering was most popular in Germany from the sixteenth century until 1650, but experienced a late eighteenth-century revival, and was often used to adorn nineteenth-century devotional texts.
