Whereunto in Annexed A Transcript of Doomsday-Book, so Far as it Concerneth Cheshire, Taken out of Original Record" by Sir Peter Leycester, published in London by W.L. for Robert Clavell in 1673. First Edition, folio (8.5" x 13.5"), with the two books bound as one and consecutively paginated, comprising 437 pages plus the final errata leaf.
The volume has been rebacked in quarter brown leather with corners over the original marbled boards. The spine has six raised bands and gilt lettering, with reddened edges and marbled endpapers. The title page is printed in black and red. The book is illustrated with coats of arms, seals, and other in-text illustrations, and includes a large folding map of the County Palatine of Chester with the ancient city of Chester at the rear.
The front pastedown bears the bookplate of the Surveyor's Institution (now the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) dated May 1900. A walking guide pamphlet to Chester is laid in, and there are occasional pencil annotations and underlining, along with neatly penciled bookseller's notes.
Condition includes edgewear, bumped corners, and fraying/chipping to the board edges. An important early work of Cheshire and English antiquarian history, particularly desirable for its first-edition status, heraldic illustrations, and large folding Cheshire map.
