"The History of Ireland from the Invasion of Henry II, with a Preliminary Discourse on the Ancient State of That Kingdom," published in Dublin by R. Marchbank in 1773. Complete in three volumes, this historical work examines Ireland’s past in the context of the Anglo-Norman invasion under Henry II and the kingdom’s earlier history. An appealing antiquarian set for collectors of Irish history, eighteenth-century historical writing, and early studies of the British Isles.
Quarto (8" x 10"), three volumes. Bound in full brown polished calf, with five raised bands to each spine. The spines feature gilt author and title lettering on red leather labels in gilt frames, gilt volume numbers on green leather labels, and elaborate gilt decoration. An armorial bookplate appears on the front pastedown.
Condition: The bindings show rubbed boards, rounded and bumped corners, and chipping and peeling to all three spines and multiple hinges. The front board of Volume II is moderately loose. These condition issues reflect the age and use of this eighteenth-century set, which remains a substantial historical collection for enthusiasts of Ireland and antiquarian books.
