Mon frère Yves is Pierre Loti’s semi-autobiographical novel about his friendship with Yves Kermadec, a Breton sailor. Drawing heavily on Loti’s own naval experiences, the book portrays life at sea, the culture and landscape of Brittany, companionship between sailors, alcoholism, family loyalty, and the tension between maritime freedom and domestic stability.
