"Works of Henry MacKenzie, Esq." by Henry MacKenzie, published in Edinburgh by James Ballantyne and Co. in 1808. This handsome eight-volume collection presents the works of the celebrated Scottish author Henry Mackenzie, an important figure in eighteenth-century Scottish literature and the sentimental literary tradition. Mackenzie's writings offer a fascinating glimpse into the literary culture of Georgian-era Edinburgh and the broader Scottish Enlightenment.
Octavo (4.625" x 7.5"). Eight volumes bound in full brown speckled leather with red-speckled edges and marbled endpapers. The spines are divided into six compartments with gilt floral motifs, a black title label with gilt lettering, gilt volume number, and gilt bands separating each panel. The spine titles show substantial chipping on most volumes, with rounded corners and other expected signs of age. Bookplates are present on the marbled pastedowns, and there are markings from previous owners on the endpapers. Foxing extends from the third free endpaper through the title page, with minimal foxing throughout the remainder of the books. Pages have yellowed with age, but there are no signs of page tearing.
A substantial early nineteenth-century set for collectors of Henry Mackenzie, Scottish literature, sentimental fiction, and Georgian-era books.
