4to.(9" x 11.125") Two volumes complete. Quarter dark brown leather with corners over light brown cloth boards. Spine with five gilt rule bordered raised bands, gilt title/vol# to second compartment, gilt rule to head and foot. All edges lightly speckled red, dark brown endpapers. Edgewear, corners bumped and rubbed, head of spines chipped with repair (see pic). Covers faded, soiled, stained and scuffed with 1.5" x 5" loss of fabric to rear fore-edge of Vol.I.. Both volumes with dark stains (dampstain? foxing?) to top margins of pages immediately prior to and after each plate, affecting plate images and text in some cases with intermittent spotting throughout. Vol. I. with chips and small closed tears to margins of first free endpaper, first free flyleaf, and title page. Map bound at start separated, now laid in, with taped repaired closed tears. Prior owners signature neatly in old ink to head of both title pages. So, to sum it up, a 100% complete set of books, all plates/maps accounted for, in a not so pretty binding but with decent spines, and something originally spreading from plates to both pages before and after. Uncommon in any condition, we're giving this a solid Good.

Sir John Malcolm (2 May 1769 – 30 May 1833) was a Scottish soldier, diplomat, administrator, and historian in British India. Born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, Malcolm joined the East India Company’s Madras Army at a young age and rose through the ranks to become a key figure in British imperial policy in Asia. Fluent in Persian, he served as a political agent and envoy to Persia, played a prominent role in the consolidation of British influence in Central India, and was appointed Governor of Bombay from 1827 to 1830. Malcolm was also a prolific writer and historian, authoring influential works such as The History of Persia and Sketches of the Political History of India, which shaped British understanding of the region. Knighted for his service, he became a trusted advisor on Indian affairs and was memorialized with a statue in Westminster Abbey.
