"Pioneers of France in the New World, [France and England in North America Part First]," by Francis Parkman, published in 1899 by Little, Brown, & Co. in Boston and F. F. Taylor & Co. in New York. Parkman’s celebrated historical work examines the French exploration, settlement, and expansion of the New World, with particular attention to the people and events that shaped French North America.

This handsome 8vo edition (approximately 5.125" x 8") is bound in quarter green morocco with generous leather tips over colorful marbled boards, with matching marbled endpapers. The raised-band spines feature four compartments with gilt and red-tooled decoration, two full compartments with red leather labels, and a smaller compartment at the foot bearing the year of publication. Top edges are gilt and side edges are deckled. Various portraits of gentlemen are sprinkled throughout the volumes.

The volumes bear Launder and Pfister Co. signed bindings, adding particular interest to the finely executed bindings. The bindings are exceptionally attractive, colorful, and in very good condition with no visible wear or tears besides one small corner tear to the third free endpaper in Vol. I. The elaborate morocco and marbled-paper bindings make this a particularly handsome late 19th-century presentation of Parkman’s important history of French America.
