"Plutarch's Lives, Translated from the Original Greek with Notes Critical and Historical and a New Life of Plutarch," edited by John and William Langhorne, 1794. London: printed for C. Bathurst, C. Nourse, et al. New Edition in Six Volumes, complete. Each 12mo volume measures approximately 4" x 7" and features a handsome full brown mottled calf binding with decorative gilt compartments, maroon leather title labels, and gilt volume numbers.

Each volume includes an engraved frontispiece. The bindings show rubbing and scuffing, with edgewear, bumped and rubbed corners, small losses to several tips, and chipping with loss at the spine heads and feet. Several spine labels have chipped with loss of lettering; joints are rubbed but remain secure. Engraved bookplates of Gaius Dean appear on the front pastedowns, with occasional prior-owner pencil names to the first free flyleaves. Foxing is present throughout, generally heavier at the beginning and end of each volume, with a marginal dampstain to the first few leaves of Volume III. Overall, an attractive complete eighteenth-century set of this enduring work of classical biography and history.
