"The Five Great Monarchies of the Ancient Eastern World; or, The History, Geography, and Antiquities of Chaldæa, Assyria, Babylon, Media, and Persia, Collected and Illustrated from Ancient and Modern Sources" by George Rawlinson, published in London by John Murray, Albemarle Street, in 1871. This Second Edition examines the great empires of the ancient Near East, drawing together historical and cultural material concerning the major civilizations of the ancient Eastern world. An important nineteenth-century work for collectors and readers interested in ancient history, Mesopotamia, Persia, Assyria, Babylonia, and biblical-era civilizations.

Octavo (5.75" x 8.75"). Bound in three-quarter burgundy morocco with matching marbled covers and endpapers and gilt top edges. The elaborate spines feature raised bands and multiple gilt compartments, with the title in the second panel and author and volume number in the fourth, each compartment separated by a row of four gilt dots. The title on the spine of Volume I has faded.

The front inner hinges are weak in all volumes, and the back board of Volume III is heavily separated from the spine. Corners are bumped, with foxing along the fore and lower edges. Foldout maps are present before the title pages in at the end of Volumes II and III. A handsome and substantial set despite its condition issues, particularly appealing to collectors of ancient Near Eastern history and nineteenth-century antiquarian scholarship.
