"The American Physician; Being a New System of Practice, Founded on Botany" by David Rogers is an important early American work on botanical medicine, intended for both families and medical practitioners. The book provides descriptions of medicinal plants, their properties and localities, and methods of preparation and use, followed by a discussion of the causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of diseases.

The work reflects the growing interest in plant-based medical practice in early 19th-century America, when botanical approaches offered an alternative to some of the more aggressive treatments common in conventional medicine of the period.

12mo. (4.5" x 6.75"), x + 130 + ii pp. 1824, Rochester, N.Y.: Printed for The Author by H. Leavenworth: Quarter tan leather over paper boards. Spine with four double gilt-rule bands.

The binding shows edgewear, with bumped and rubbed corners and loss to the tips. Both boards have areas of paper loss, more pronounced on the upper board, along with scuffing and staining. A prior owner's name is neatly written in old ink on the rear free endpaper. Foxing occurs throughout, and a table of contents appears at the front of the text.

A fascinating artifact of the early American botanical medicine movement and a useful glimpse into the period's interest in medicinal plants and alternative approaches to medical practice.
