"Prose Writings of Bayard Taylor, Northern Travel: Norway, Lapland, &c.," published in New York by G. P. Putnam in 1862, presents Bayard Taylor’s observations and experiences in Norway, Lapland, and Scandinavia.
Octavo (5.25" x 7.75"), bound in quarter brown leather with leather corners over marbled boards, with gilt spine lettering, five slightly raised bands, and decorative floral tooling in the remaining compartments. The title appears in the second panel and the author in the fourth. The corners are bumped and rounded, and the front board is severely detached from the spine. An old library or collection inventory label from Camden, N.J., bears a monogram logo, case/shelf location, and catalog number.
The frontispiece is believed to depict Bayard Taylor and is accompanied by the sentimental inscription, “Ever faithfully yours, Bayard Taylor.” Several pages show slight foxing. An appealing early edition for collectors of Bayard Taylor, Scandinavian travel literature, and 19th-century exploration.
