- Format
- George Ticknor’s History of Spanish Literature (1849) was a landmark in North American Hispanism, and subsequently helped to establish the romantic image of Spain in the USA. In this book, Ticknor understands Spanish literature to be solely Castilian. Consequently, in his view, Spanish literature prevailed while other peninsular literatures fell into decay. Ticknor creates a narrative history depicting Spanish culture and civilization while bringing to bear an emplotment of nation through literature in terms of identity and national character. He consolidates this into a coherent whole reflected in the construction of the image of Spain, which rests firmly on the dominance of the Castilian language.
