Anecdotes of Painting in England is a multi-volume historical account of the development of painting—and related arts like engraving, sculpture, and architecture—in England. It provides biographical sketches, critical commentary, and personal stories about English (and some foreign) artists who worked in Britain from the medieval period up to the 18th century. It is often regarded as the first comprehensive biographical study of the history of the arts in England.
