"Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada" by Washington Irving, Agapida Edition, Author’s Revised Edition, published in 1893 by G. P. Putnam’s Sons in New York and London. This historical narrative recounts the Christian conquest of Granada and the final stages of Muslim rule in Spain, bringing together historical events, personalities, and the atmosphere of late medieval Spain through Irving’s engaging literary style.
Octavo (6" x 8.5"). Two volumes, complete. Bound in full cream cloth with an elaborate all-over gilt design and light green, light peach, and gilt arabesque decoration on the beveled upper boards. The rear boards are plain, and the spines are similarly decorated with gilt lettering. The set features gilt top edges, rough-cut remaining edges, and printed endpapers. The title pages and every text page are framed with light green and red decorative borders. Illustrated with 30 plates, each with a lettered tissue guard.
The original dust jackets are absent. The bindings show edgewear, lightly rubbed corners, lightly soiled boards, and sun-darkened spines. A line of blue crayon or similar marking appears on the rear beveled board of Volume I. A previous owner’s name is written in ink at the head of the front pastedowns.
An attractive decorative set for collectors of Washington Irving, Spanish history, the Reconquista, and beautifully illustrated nineteenth-century books.
