"An Atlas of Topographical Anatomy After Plane Sections of Frozen Bodies" by Wilhelm Braune, translated by Edward Bellamy, published in Philadelphia by Lindsay and Blakiston in 1877. This illustrated medical reference explores human topographical anatomy through plane sections of frozen bodies, featuring numerous in-text woodcuts and anatomical plates.
Quarto (7.5" x 11"). xii, 200 pages. Bound in full brown pebbled cloth with blind-stamped borders to the boards and gilt lettering to the spine, with light brown endpapers. The binding shows edgewear, bumped and rubbed corners, slight fraying and small closed tears at the spine ends, lightly soiled boards, and a sun-faded spine. The front pastedown bears an AGNM bookplate and a Milford Town Library discard sticker, with a remnant of sticker removal below. Illustrated with 34 plates, including three that are laid in or loose from the binding; Plate XXVIII has a ragged fore-edge. Dozens of additional illustrations appear throughout the text. An appealing historical medical and anatomical reference for collectors of antique medical books, anatomy, and the history of science.
