"Democracy in America" by Alexis de Tocqueville, translated by Henry Reeve and Francis Bowen, Revised Third Edition, published in Cambridge by Sever and Francis in 1863. Tocqueville’s influential study examines American democracy, political institutions, social equality, civic life, and the development of democratic society. This two-volume edition offers a nineteenth-century presentation of a foundational work in political thought and American history.

Octavo (5.5" x 8.25"). Two volumes, complete. Bound in full burgundy cloth with blind-stamped rules framing the boards, faded gilt spine lettering, and yellow endpapers. The bindings show edgewear, bumped and rubbed corners, with three tips worn through to the boards. The spine ends are ruffled with small closed tears and some loss at the head; both spines are sun-darkened, and Volume II has small closed tears to its spine. The boards are stained, sun-faded in places, scuffed, and rubbed. The yellow endpapers show finger smudges and soiling. Volume II has mostly marginal dampstaining along the fore-edge through approximately the first 50 leaves. A prior owner’s name is written neatly in pencil on the first free flyleaf.

A sound, collectible historical set for readers and collectors interested in American democracy, political philosophy, and classic nineteenth-century social commentary.
